Sport Climbing day at Silvermine Lower Crag (Beginner-Intermediate), 28 January 2024

By Wade Basson

On Sunday, 28 January 2024, the MCSA Stellenbosch section organised a fun day of sport climbing at Silvermine Lower Crag, one of the most scenic and accessible crags in the Cape Peninsula. The event was open to members and guests, and attracted more than 30 enthusiastic climbers of all levels, half of which were guests to the club.

The weather was perfect for climbing, with clear skies, a gentle breeze, and mild temperatures. The day was also an opportunity for beginners to learn the basics of climbing, such as belaying, knot-tying, safety checks, and communication. A few experienced climbers volunteered to help out with workshopping and sharing their tips and tricks with the newcomers; with the climbing day well-received and appreciated by the participants, who gained confidence and skills throughout the day. A friendly and supportive atmosphere, with climbers cheering each other on, offering advice, and swapping stories.

The group wrapped up the climbing in the late afternoon with some of the climbers deciding to extend the fun by going for a swim at the Silvermine reservoir. The day was a great success, and the first of many for the 2024 climbing year. The MCSA Stellenbosch section thanks everyone for joining and contributing to the incredible success of the day.
